Wings and Things

On a farm in a very rural area near Cromwell, Iowa, I was born and an only child for seven years and few playmates near by. So I learned to entertain myself with my pet dog and cats.

Colors, pictures and art have always intrigued me and I delighted in my student’s art during my 28 years of teaching elementary children. Photography started when my team teacher and I made a calendar with images of the kindergartners as Christmas presents for their parents.

As retirement drew near I knew art had to be a part of my life. Bird watching introduced more photography and I began studying art with Connie Stewart, Mary Behling, Barbara Wolfe and Pat Cashin while also taking workshops from other well known artists. This expanded my world to abstract painting and collage. I come from a family of seamstresses, and craft interested women. So creation was there from an early age. My Mother had a profound affect on my creativity with her own talent showing up in decorating the home, sewing clothes for my sister and me and herself. As my cousins and I grew we started sewing for ourselves.

I credit the sewing for my interest in painting, tearing and pasting all kinds of paper, then reassembling them as collages. The depression years of my childhood introduced me to recycling and "found objects" to be used in art.

Entering many art shows has rewarded me with ribbons, plus two solo art shows of my own work.

Gene Cohen, MD., PhD. in his book "The Creative Age" tells of his observation of older people and how creativity begins to develop in the second half of our lives. I am inspired by watching my peers as we work and progress in our artistic talents.

My family has also been very supportive of my creativity, and for that I am grateful.
